Program outline

Will it be Trash or Treasure? The question that runs through the mind of a thousand potential collectors.

How often have we seen something on a TV programme that has fetched a high price and said, “My Mum had one of those but she threw it out”?

The antiques and collectables trade is changing fast and what was once a common object, a throw away item or just considered ‘junk’ can now fetch high prices with collectors around the world. Do you know what an original Chopper bike in mint condition is worth now, or a Sinclair C5, or a plastic toy given away by a fast food chain? Well, Trash or Treasure could be just what you need.

The collectables of “today” are items from popular culture, film and music as well as toys (never played with and including the all-important box), technology, kitsch, domestic items and ephemera from every walk of life. The market, buoyed by the Internet, is creating its own demand. The key is in knowing what’s hot, what’s not and what’s going to be hot in the future.

Trash or Treasure gives participants the opportunity to guess the values of a wide range of collectables from the past 50 years – from a camera, novelty radio and toy robot to a retro television, rare magazine and limited edition 7” single. All can be handled, with care, as the teams work their way around the items guessing their age, original price and current value.

A fun, sophisticated and informative experience, Trash or Treasure provides a highly-desirable centrepiece for an evening event or pre-dinner reception.

Learning and development outcomes

Trash or Treasure is a unique networking tool that cleverly stimulates discussion, wit and storytelling to create a sociable and positive atmosphere. Effective communication and decision making are required to ensure guesstimates are reflective of the whole team not simply one individual. An engaging and current theme, Trash or Treasure leaves participants with lasting shared memories and connections.
